GUIDE TO CHOOSING A HAIR PROSTHESIS | Hair TOPPERS
Hello again, I'm Damaris
If you've made it here, it's probably because you have alopecia and you may be considering whether to buy a hair prosthesis such as the natural hair Topper that I use.
This article (it will be a first part) aims to be a guide to hair prostheses, to help you with some advice so that you can decide which could be the best hair prosthesis for your case and specifically, when it comes to a Topper for women with female alopecia.
CONGRATULATIONS
The first thing I want to do is congratulate you, because if you have made it to this point, you deserve congratulations, since not all women reach this moment of acceptance and of understanding that their problem no longer has a solution and they need to look for another alternative for their alopecia.
For many women it is, or we could call it, a grieving process, since they accept the loss of their own hair and know that they have to stop looking for a solution to their problem or their illness.
Also, if you have made it to this point, you also understand that this is not a cure, but an alternative.
So let's see if these details manage to help you choose the best hair Topper for you.
HAIR TOPPER BASES
The main thing to understand are details about the material it is made of, the measurements and then, also related, the density and the length of your hair prosthesis
The Bases of these hair prostheses are mainly three, although there are combinations too. So let's talk about these three types of bases.
HAIR LACE:

I don't have any topper of this type, but it is like a mesh or a gauze where the hairs are tied, so sometimes you can notice the little knots and it may not give such a natural result.
It is also used in wigs, where sometimes you can see them sold with a lace at the front, to trim it and thus simulate, in a very natural way, the growth of the hair
MONO BASE HAIR PROSTHESES

The second base would be the MONO.
The Topper in the photo is a natural hair Topper with a mono base, which is very very light and, as you can see, quite breathable and the parting can be made across the whole mono base.
HAIR PROSTHESIS WITH SILK BASE

The third base for hair prostheses would be the one called silk base.
On these bases, as a general rule, the hairs have been placed by hand, and mine has a part that is sewn and machine-woven, which would include the inner area and which would be the silk part.
It also gives a very Natural result and the parting can be made across the whole area of the base.
With this we have now identified the three types of bases for hair prostheses, specifically for natural hair Toppers.
Once you have decided the type of base you want, now we need to know the measurements and this is very very important since each person and each woman has a different type of hair loss
Since the cases are different, for each of them there will be a suitable measurement. I'm going to put a chart here so you can see exactly what the type of hair loss and recommended measurements are.

In my case, I have had androgenetic alopecia for quite a long time, so it is quite advanced and I have to choose the appropriate size.
For example, although I have the topper with mono base that I showed earlier, since it has a smaller base, when I put that topper on, it hurts and pulls, because the clips end up placed where I have no hair.
That creates traction and pulls quite a lot and my hair can end up breaking and what I don't want is to lose more hair, because I don't have much.
So it's as if, for example, you take a little stick: being just one, you can break or snap it easily, but if you take 100 it is harder to break.
The same happens to me with hair: if I put the clip where I have very little hair, it is likely to break, but if I put it where I have more hair, it will be well secured and won't get damaged.
In fact, this is one of the questions I'm asked most when I give consultations, they ask me whether wearing this type of hair prosthesis will cause any problem to their own hair.
The answer is that it shouldn't, if we choose the right base and size.
HAIR PROSTHESIS DENSITY
Moving on to the other point to pay attention to when deciding which hair prosthesis to buy, it is good to keep in mind that, as a general rule, smaller bases have less density and also less length.
The longer it is, the more weight the hair prosthesis has and we need a bigger base to be able to hold that amount of hair.
So, the problem is that many women, when they realize they want to wear a natural hair topper, also realize that they need a large base because they have considerable hair loss.
I'm going to put a photo of where my hair loss reaches, and in my case, I need a base that covers, for two reasons:
- First, for aesthetics, because I want it to cover it and
- Second, for what we said before, I don't want the clips to fall where I have little hair.

If a person has little hair loss, she can opt for a smaller base, with less density, and the advantage of this is that the transition is much more natural since you don't go from having little hair to having a lot, but rather a little bit more.
Perhaps later on you can move up to a higher-density topper.
The thing is that, as happened to me and happens to many women, when we get to know hair prostheses, natural hair toppers or other kinds of alternative hair, we have already arrived with quite considerable hair loss.
When this happens, we know we need a large base, but we don't want to have so much density, so that others don't notice the difference as much.
Of course your hair prosthesis can be cut and there is no problem, but you can also get used to wearing more hair, because that was the point: we had no hair and we wanted to have hair, so we also have to understand this situation.
POSSIBLE DISAPPOINTMENTS AND HOW TO HANDLE THEM
Let's say you have already decided what size, what type of base you want and the color, and your topper arrives.
Well, what happens now? What happens is that you are very disappointed with what you have received,
- First because the topper has been in storage, so it has surely been squashed and has no shape.
- Second, because it is a lot of hair and you tell yourself: now what do I do with this, it doesn't suit me, etc.
Some recommendations to solve this situation are:
- Wear it every day when you receive it, so that the base adapts to the shape of your head, because since it has been squashed it needs to adapt.
- It is very important to go to a stylist. There are women who have to go two or three times until they get the desired style, since the first time doesn't always work, because as that hair is not going to grow, maybe you don't do much to it.
- Also, sometimes coloring it can be a problem, so it is recommended to darken, going from a lighter color to one or more darker, and not the other way around.
WILL THEY NOTICE I'M WEARING A HAIR PROSTHESIS?
Once you start using it at home and want to go out on the street, the question will come up of whether it will be noticeable.
Well, I think the key is to realize that sometimes we notice it more ourselves because we see ourselves differently and if it happens that other people notice it, so what, you wear heels to go out, you wear eyelash extensions that aren't yours, you get permanent makeup and it shows, so this is just one more thing, there is no reason to be ashamed.
Alopecia is not shameful, it is an illness like any other. Just think that if you are going through chemotherapy, if you are going through stress in your life, there is nothing to be ashamed of, you want to look better and this is the solution you have decided on.
If you want to tell people, fine, and if you don't want to, that's fine too, but you have to reach this point, where you have accepted that this is the solution you want and now you have to dare to put it into practice.
You have to dare to wear it, I know it is a process that is hard for many women and it is something I understand perfectly.
For many other women, it is a complicated process, which is why I encourage you to take the step, but it is something you have to decide. You have to decide that you are at that point and that now you want to dare.
Remember, the alternative hair topper can adapt to you without a problem; the question, sometimes, is in our head, whether we want to do it or not. If you take it to a stylist and give it the right touch, the cut, the color, it will surely work for you.
There are many women who are doing it and it is working for them, so why wouldn't it work for you.
For me it has changed my life and I feel much better; I have explained it many times and that is why I do consultations, to be able to help more people do the same.

Now, if I have to go out, I put it on and I'm ready, I don't have the problems I used to have. Of course, you have some limitations since it isn't your real hair.
So to finish, I think that by knowing how to recognize the size you need for your case and choosing a hair prosthesis in line with that size, the dimension and the desired length, you can find the best hair prosthesis for you.
