THE REALITY OF USING A TOPPER | WOMEN'S HAIR PROSTHESIS | DISAPPOINTMENTS

The reality of using Hair Prostheses | Hair Toppers

Using natural hair Toppers could go very much along with the famous saying "the truth hurts", because when I share these things, which are a little less positive, some people get upset.

But you know what? I prefer to give a realistic view of what it is like to use a hair prosthesis, because when you see online certain transformations of women who wear a wig or topper, everything seems almost magical.

Sometimes things are not as they seem. Not everything is so easy and that is why I would like to share these things with you. They are details, some of which are quite obvious and others may be more trivial, but they are there.

I hope you like the article.

Is it comfortable to wear a hair prosthesis or a Hair Topper?

Hair toppers have become a popular solution because, we could say, they are alternative hair pieces that offer a practical and less invasive solution, compared to full wigs.

In my case, as I wear a Topper, after so long wearing it, about 2 years, it's not that I feel it's a nuisance on my head.
Of course, it's obvious that you notice you're wearing something, as if you were wearing a hat or a cap. You know you have something on top of your head, but after that initial sensation, it no longer bothers me and it shouldn't bother you either if you choose the best topper for your personal case.
So, a topper is not uncomfortable to wear, but I do have to say that I miss that feeling of not wearing anything on my head. Now the hair prosthesis is always present.
Sometimes, I compare it to wearing high-heeled shoes. When you've spent all day in high heels, you're longing to get home to take them off, so, and only on occasion, as I was telling you, that happens to me with the Topper, on "long" days when I have to wear it a lot, I'm longing to get home and take the topper off.
On summer days, this can happen a little more, since just like natural hair, as I now have more hair, using a hair prosthesis in summer, wearing a hair prosthesis makes you hotter, but even so, many times the topper serves me as protection from the sun's rays.
But the truth is that the benefits more than make up for these details about the small discomforts you might have with a Topper.
In fact, some articles that talk about the benefits of hair Toppers say that among those benefits are the following, and I agree with them...

Benefits of Using Hair Toppers

  • Increased Volume: They allow you to have more hair volume and make them ideal for people with thin hair or partial hair loss, as is my case.
  • Comfort: Toppers are lighter and more comfortable than full wigs.
  • Versatility: They are easy to apply and remove, if you choose the appropriate model.
  • Improves quality of life. For me this has been the best benefit. It's something priceless in your day-to-day life.

Hairstyles with a hair prosthesis

Another thing I miss about wearing a natural hair Topper is the possibility of doing more hairstyles.

Of course, before I couldn't do many either, because of my androgenic alopecia problem, but my first hair Topper was 40 cm, which is not that long, but it's certainly much longer than I wore it before, but it's true that in the end I end up a little limited in terms of hairstyle ideas.

I generally end up wearing my hair long and loose, with or without bangs, perhaps also because I don't know how to do anything else and I have to start trying new hairstyles with a topper.

The fact that I was able to choose the ideal Topper for me helps a lot, because if it happens that you make a mistake and don't choose the appropriate Topper, everything gets more complicated.

How to Choose the Perfect Hair Topper

Choosing the right hair topper involves considering several factors, and that is why if anyone has doubts, they can write to me to request FREE advice via Whatsapp. You can request it HERE:

    • Hair Type: Natural vs. synthetic. Well, I don't recommend synthetic because of everything it implies in terms of durability, cost and problems it will cause you.
    • Color and Texture: Choosing the color of your hair prosthesis is usually the hardest part and that is why I also like it when, before buying a Topper, there are people who write to me to be more certain and not throw their money away.
    • Size and Shape: We could talk about this at length, but if you want, I recommend this other article, where I talk about this matter in more depth.

Texture and color of Hair Toppers

Another thing where you have to be realistic is when choosing the color of your hair prosthesis and the hair texture.

In my case it doesn't affect or worry me much, but it is true that the change in texture or color between the alternative hair piece and your own hair can be slightly noticeable.
Sometimes, to give you an example, when I have explained to some friends that I wear a hair topper and they have asked if they can touch it, they do notice a certain difference in texture between my hair, which is very fine, and the texture of the topper.
In my case, it's not so, so noticeable that you would get
to see the difference, but I have seen that there are girls who have a hair texture very different from that of the topper, so, especially at the front, if they want to blend it well, they may have to do a treatment on their own hair.

On the other hand there is the color of the hair prosthesis. Natural hair color has so many variants, so it is very difficult for a topper you buy to be exactly the same as your natural color .
So you have to understand that you won't be able to find exactly a copy of your hair; you can find an approximation but it's true that it won't be totally the same, after all it is a hair prosthesis.

    Hair growth

Believe it or not, seeing my hair grow is one more thing I strangely miss from my previous situation.
Seeing my own hair, such as, for example, your bangs, and thanks to that growth, you go on doing different things, yes I miss it and it goes a bit together with what I said before about hairstyles with the hair Topper.
This hair prosthesis is always the same, always the same cut, the same hairstyle, and if it happens to you like it did to me, that when you go to the hairdresser they leave your bangs short because they went a little too far, then it's worse, because there's no way for it to grow. They've left me too short and there's no way for it to grow.
I used to be accustomed to my bangs growing and you keep cutting them. Now I almost never see my hair, it's quite a silly point, but I truly miss seeing my own hair grow and changing the hairstyle.
Also, what happens is that as the ends wear out, I have to keep cutting it, and that's where something different can be done, but at the front, for example, it will always be more or less the same.

    Naturalness of the Topper

And lastly, and we could say it's not that important either, it's that naturalness of being able to run your hand through your hair.
I think it's normal for women, perhaps if we're nervous, to run a hand through our hair without worrying about taking the hair prosthesis with you.
I can still do it in some areas of my head, but I can't do it as before, since if I'm careless, I could end up with my hair piece in my hand, although the Topper is held firmly with the clips.

    Comparison: Toppers vs. Wigs

So, speaking of my personal experience and of what using a hair prosthesis of this type has been for me, I can say that these things are the ones I miss and they are the previous details and the sensations I have after using alternative hair for 2 years.

I haven't used wigs and the only thing I can say about their advantages over a wig could be summed up in the following points:

    Toppers:

    • They are designed for partial coverage, are lighter and cooler.
    • They allow greater integration with your own hair.
    • They are usually less expensive and easier to maintain.

    Wigs:

    • They help people with more serious hair loss problems and provide full coverage, something the Topper cannot do in some cases.
    • Wigs offer more styles and colors.
    • Depending on the model, they can be heavier and require more maintenance.
HERE I talk a little more about these differences and how both wigs and toppers are valid options, but for different cases.

Tips for New Hair Topper Users

It's normal to have many doubts before deciding to buy a hair prosthesis and even more so because it is a significant investment of money.

So if you can, before buying your hair prosthesis:

      • Try Before You Buy: Make sure to try different styles and sizes. This is not always possible and that is why in my case I like to give free advice via whatsapp.
      • Consult with Professionals: Getting advice from stylists, dermatologists or people who are going through the same thing as you can help you choose the best option.
      • Patience and Adaptation: This is essential. We need to give ourselves time to get used to the topper and learn to handle it properly. But you will undoubtedly see that it is well worth it

Conclusion: Assessing the Experience with Hair Toppers

It is true that, as I have mentioned in this article, there are things I miss, I have also come across things I didn't expect when using a natural hair Toppper and not everything is rosy.

But when weighing these small negative things against the improvement in my quality of life from using a hair prosthesis... I go with the latter without a doubt.

Hair toppers offer an effective solution to improve your appearance, they have significant benefits for your self-esteem and although there are, let's call them, challenges, such as blending with natural hair and limitations in hairstyles, the overall experience is very positive.

Again.. if you have any doubts, write to me and we'll talk. I hope this article has been useful to you. A hug.
